Eastern Fairy Slipper (Calypso bulbosa var. americana)

Eastern Fairy Slipper (Calypso bulbosa var. americana)

There are two varieties of this exquisite orchid - the variety shown here, variety americana, has a yellow beard and unspotted lip. The other, variety occidentalis (shown below), has a white beard and a spotted lip. Generally variety occidentalis is found only in the North Cascades and areas west of the Rockies, while this variety is much more widespread. The old common name for this Fairy Slipper is Hider-of-the-North. This was photographed near the top of Emperor Hill on the Berg Lake trail in Mount Robson Provincial Park.

apple bucket 007

apple bucket 007

This is an old bucket that I have painted and "grunged up" a bit and painted "AppleS" in red and outlined in white.

The bucket is your typical scrub bucket being about 9" inches tall and 10" in diameter.

The apples and crows soft sculptures are included (I modified a Becky Erickson pattern). The apples and crows are made from the highest quality muslin and stuffed with new fiberfill. All pieces are hand painted and "quick aged" for that grungy look.

Xanadu... City wall of X'ian

Xanadu... City wall of X'ian

When Zhu Yuanzhang, the first Emperor of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), captured Huizhou, a hermit named Zhu Sheng admonished him that he should 'built high walls, store abundant food supplies and take time to be an Emperor,' so that he could fortify the city and unify the other states. After the establishment of the Ming dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang followed his advice and began to enlarge the wall built initially during the old Tang dynasty (618 -907), creating the modern Xian City Wall. It's the most complete city wall that has survived in China, as well being one of the largest ancient military defensive systems in the world.
After the extension, the wall now stands 12 meters (40 feet) tall, 12-14 meters (40-46 feet) wide at the top and 15-18 meters (50-60 feet) thick at the bottom. It covers 13.7 kilometers (8.5 miles) in length with a deep moat surrounding it. Every 120 meters, there is a rampart which extends out from the main wall. All together, there are 98 ramparts on the wall, which were built to defend against the enemy climbing up the wall. Each rampart has a sentry building, in which the soldiers could protect the entire wall without exposing themselves to the enemy. Besides, the distance between every two ramparts is just within the range of an arrow shot from either side, so that they could shoot the enemy, who wanted to attack the city, from the side. On the outer side of the city wall, there are 5948 crenellations, namely battlements. The soldiers can outlook and shoot at the enemy. On the inner side, parapets were built to protect the soldiers from falling off,

Initially, the wall was built with layers of dirt, with the base layer including also lime and glutinous rice extract. Throughout the time Xian City Wall has been restored three times. In 1568, Zhang Zhi (the government officer of that period) was in charge to rebuild the wall with bricks. In 1781, another officer, Bi Yuan, refitted the city wall and the gate towers. More recently (since 1983) the Shaanxi Provincial Government restored the city wall again. A circular park has been built along the high wall and the deep moat. The thriving trees and flowers decorate the classical Chinese architecture of the wall, adding additional beauty to the city of Xian.

DUCKSTOWN AND ITS MAN-SIZED STONES

DUCKSTOWN AND ITS MAN-SIZED STONES

A short story by Yoko Ono, 1983

Once upon a time, there was a town called Duckstown. The town was very, very poor. So poor that it made all other towns around it poor. Four important townsmen got together to discuss what to do about it.

"What we could do is to cut down on expenses. I observe an outrageous imbalance in the general family spending of our town. Our men's tradition of drinking bourbon and smoking 'the-fatter-the-better' cigars, while their children have virtually nothing to eat is simply disgraceful. I suggest that we strongly advise the men of our town to reflect on their attitudes." This remark was made by Mr. Middlesex, whose ancestors 'had come on the Mayflower', so to speak.

"Objection!" screamed Mr. Bambino, his face turning red, as usual, when he felt emotionally challenged, and poured his fourth bourbon in his glass. Mr. Bambino was the owner of the Super-Race, a bicycle manufacturing company. "I detest Mr. Middlesex' holier-than-thou attitude. Our poverty has nothing to do with what men are doing. Men who don't follow tradition are still in their diapers, I say. Let grown men take care of this town. We are the ones keeping whatever economy going for this town, anyway. Don't try to mess with our tradition, Mr. Middlesex. You'll be very sorry if you did that."

"I think we'll be alright." That was Mr. Chow, an owner of large chain restaurants. "As long as our farms are functioning, our cows and chickens are well, and if we have enough to eat, I think we'll be alright."

"Who says we're eating? Come to our section of town and we'll show you a thing or two!" This was Mr. Whitelove, an ex-boxing champion. His voice was charged with an anger of a hungry coyote, while his muscles suggested that he was actually a twelve-steak-a-day man.

The more they spoke, the more they confirmed their feelings of dislike for each other.

It was getting dark, and the cleaning woman started to vacuum the floor. Now the four men had to shout even louder over the sound of the vacuum, though none of them asked the cleaning woman to stop. Mr. Middlesex thought it was good that the vacuum was drowning Mr. Bambino's loud voice that seemed to go on without any punctuation. Mr. Chow thought if they stopped her, the cleaning woman would charge overtime and that would be worse. Mr. Bambino and Mr. Whitelove were too excited over their argument to notice anything. Suddenly the vacuuming stopped.

"You guys want to know how to make this town rich?" All four looked at the cleaning woman, stunned.
"Yes, Miriam," Mr. Middlesex addressed her in a way one spoke to a foreigner or an infant, emphasizing each syllable evenly. "We are discussing how we can make our town less poor, and thereby making our people feel not as deflated as now."

"I know how to make this town rich and people happy," said Miriam.

Another long silence.

Then the four men started to laugh. "That's very nice, Miriam. But how would you know how to be rich when you can't even get a house for yourself? Aren't you the one who came to us and cried since you couldn't even feed your sons when Dick died? Wasn't that how you got this job in the first place?"

"I know how to make this town rich and people happy," said Miriam.

"Poor Miriam is in the another world, if you know what I mean, since Dick left us. We shouldn't listen to her. Let's continue with our discussion shall we?" whispered Mr. Middlesex to the other three men.

"I'm sick and tired of listening to your fancy ideas, Mr. Middlesex, 'Change the town's name to Swanstown to uplift your spirit?" What was that? It's coming straight from Lady Middlesex and her leotard men..."

"Leave my mother out of this, Mr. Bambino!" shouted Mr. Middlesex.

"Cut it out! What on earth are you talking about anyway?" This was Mr. Whitelove.

"You're right. We're not getting anywhere. That I agree." Mr. Middlesex cleared his throat. He began to think it was a good idea to listen to Miriam, just to take a break from all this. He wasn't enjoying Mr. Bambino's constant attack on his masculinity, a very low blow he felt. "What was your suggestion, Miriam, let us hear about it."

"Yeah, tell us, Miriam.", Mr. Whitelove joined Mr. Middlesex.

"Well, anything will do, " said Miriam and looked around. "That stone there. That'll do the work." Miriam pointed out the window. There was a huge man-sized stone lying in front of the Bureau.

"That stone, Miriam?" Mr. Chow whispered to the three, " I remember hearing that she dabbles in black magic. This is really unwise. If it ever came out that this committee even considered listening to her..."

"I personally don't care if it's black, white or purple, as long as it works," said Mr. Bambino. "Now, Miriam, as members of the town's Bureau,

Chief Vann House

Chief Vann House

Construction of The Vann HouseWhen James Vann was rising to become the wealthiest businessman in the Cherokee Nation as well as a chief, he decided to build a two-story brick house which would reflect his status. For its construction, Vann brought in professional architects for its design. In addition to providing an education to local Cherokees, the Moravians contributed to the building.

In July 1803, a man named Vogt, perhaps James Vann’s brother in-law, Charles Vogt, and Dr. Henry Chandlee Forman, arrived to begin construction. Work began in late 1803 and the house was completed early in 1804. Both the exterior walls (which are around eighteen inches thick) and the interior walls (which are around eight inches (203 mm) thick) are solid brick. These bricks came from the red clay located on the Spring Place Plantation (Vann House) property. Handwrought nails and hinges came from Vann's own blacksmith shop. Only the interior walls of the third floor are plaster on wood.

The house is a combination of the late Federal style architecture and early Georgian style. Both Georgian and Federal styled homes have two full stories with a half third story. The house has this type of design: the ceilings of both the first and second floor stand at twelve feet, while the ceiling of the third floor stands at only six feet.

The first and second floors have the standard three rooms. On both levels there is a room to the east, a room to the west, and a hallway dividing the two. On the first level, the room to the east is the Vann dining room, while the room to the west is the drawing room, more commonly referred to as a family or living room. On the second floor, the room to the east is the master bedroom and the room to the west is the guest bedroom. Only the third floor, which operated as storage space during James’s life and then as children's rooms during Joseph’s life, strays from this common design.

The third floor is divided into two rooms. The room that the stairway leads into on the third floor is believed to have served as the boys' room. This room is two-thirds the width of the home and has two closets cut into its walls. The second room of the third floor is that of the girls. This room is only one-third the width of the home; however, this room could be shut off from the boy’s room, giving the girls more privacy.

The interior of the home is decorated with beautiful colors. The four colors present in the home are red, blue, green, and yellow. White is used throughout the home but only as a filler color. There are two possible reasons for these four colors in the home. The first possibility is that these four colors represent different elements of nature. Red represents the Georgia red clay, blue represents the sky, green represents the trees and grass, and yellow represents the wheat and corn of the harvest. The second possibility is that these four colors are part of Federal style colors.

The red, blue, and yellow seen in the Vann House were often used in other homes of the late seventeen hundreds and the early eighteen hundreds. The only difference between how these colors were used in this home versus how they are used in other homes of the time is the way in which they are distributed. Most homes of the Federal period would concentrate colors in one room, giving a house a red room, blue room, etc. However, in the Vann House the colors have been mixed in almost every room giving the rooms a multi-color appearance, as well as the mantels, door jambs, and wainscotings, all of which are original to the house. The doors, known as Christian doors, are of special interest. Their construction features a cross and an open Bible.

In addition to the blacksmith shop, the 800-acre (3.2 km2) property around the Vann House included 42 slave cabins, 6 barns, 5 smokehouses, a trading post, more than 1,000 peach trees, 147 apple trees, and a still.

After constructing The Vann House, James lived at the house for 5 years before he was killed at Buffington’s Tavern in 1809. After his death, his favorite child, Rich Joe Vann, which was neither his youngest or eldest child, inherited the house.

But I adore the looks on their faces!! It was taken in the darkest of rooms, 3200 ISO, & I didn't realize that I had the stabilizer turned off on the lens... In full size all you see is noise, esp. on my boy's face there on the right. They were singing happy birthday to eachother which they thought was hilarious, & I happened to snap this by chance. :)

Oh, and that monstrous thing with 8 candles on it-- it's a brick of ice cream "iced" with Cool Whip supposedly made to look like a Lego brick. LOL The pegs on top are York peppermint patties. It worked well in theory, but in reality, I have no clue how to quickly ice a melting wad of milk smoothly... Her cake turned out better-- it was an actual cake & was made to look kinda like Dora's house (it's her 5th Dora birthday-- her first word was "backpack" at 8 mths old & someday she'll grow out of it LOL). We opted to decorate the ice cream since he wanted a Lego brick cake & I figured that would make the whole 2 bday cake scenario easier since we always have ice cream along with cake... Next year she'll get the ice cream & he'll pick the cake!

Heaven is for Real: A Little Boy's Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back

A young boy emerges from life-saving surgery with remarkable stories of his visit to heaven.
Heaven Is for Real is the true story of the four-year old son of a small town Nebraska pastor who during emergency surgery slips from consciousness and enters heaven. He survives and begins talking about being able to look down and see the doctor operating and his dad praying in the waiting room. The family didn't know what to believe but soon the evidence was clear.
Colton said he met his miscarried sister, whom no one had told him about, and his great grandfather who died 30 years before Colton was born, then shared impossible-to-know details about each. He describes the horse that only Jesus could ride, about how "reaaally big" God and his chair are, and how the Holy Spirit "shoots down power" from heaven to help us.
Told by the father, but often in Colton's own words, the disarmingly simple message is heaven is a real place, Jesus really loves children, and be ready, there is a coming last battle.
